Physics Electrostatics Potential & Capacitance General MCQ (Single Correct)

Figure shows two infinitely large conducting plates A and B. If electric field at C due to charge densities σ 1 , σ 2 , σ 3 and σ 4 is E , find σ 2 and σ 3 in terms of E. State whether this much information is sufficient to find σ 1 and σ 4 in terms of E. Derive a relation between σ 1 and σ 4 .

The correct answer is:
CHECK THE SOLUTION.

σ 1 = σ 4 , σ 2 = ε 0 E, σ 3 = – ε 0 E

Sol. By considering Gaussian surface as shown in figure, and applying Gauss law

We have

EA =

∴ E =

∴ σ 2 = ε 0 E

Also, σ 3 = – σ 2 = – ε 0 E.

We can not find σ 1 and σ 4 .

E at P = 0

P at E = 0

⇒ σ 1 = σ 4

σ 1 = σ 4
